THE HISTORICAL RAT CATCHER!
Our Historical Rat Catcher service brings the fascinating, gruesome and often overlooked world of pest control to life through four distinct historical characters, each representing a different period in history. From the streets of medieval England to the muddy trenches of the First World War, our costumed historical interpreters roam your event, engaging visitors through storytelling, meet-and-greets, photographs and interactive living history.
Each character features their own period costume, interpretation and stories, offering visitors a unique glimpse into one of history’s most unpleasant but essential occupations.
1. The Medieval Rat Catcher
Medieval England
Step back into the medieval world, where rats and vermin were a constant threat to homes, food stores and communities. Our medieval rat catcher brings to life the rough-and-ready character of a man making his living hunting pests in crowded streets and settlements. Through period costume, colourful storytelling and public interaction, visitors discover the grim realities of medieval life, the dangers of vermin and the methods used to control them.
2. The Georgian Rat Catcher
The Georgian Era
Meet a Georgian rat catcher from an age of bustling towns, growing cities and expanding trade. Dressed in period clothing and equipped for his unpleasant trade, this character reveals how professional rat catchers earned their keep protecting homes, businesses, warehouses and food supplies. With engaging historical interpretation and a touch of Georgian character, audiences discover the tricks of the trade, the challenges of the job and the importance of pest control before modern methods existed.
3. The Victorian Rat Catcher
Victorian Britain
Enter the grimy streets of Victorian Britain, where overcrowded housing, industrial growth and poor sanitation created ideal conditions for rats and other vermin. Our Victorian rat catcher introduces visitors to the dangerous and dirty realities of urban life, sharing stories of trapping techniques, rat-infested cellars, the spread of disease and the people who made their living keeping infestations under control. Expect fascinating facts, gruesome tales and plenty of opportunities for audience interaction.
4. The Great War Rat Catcher
The Trenches of the First World War
Venture into the unpleasant world of the Western Front, where rats thrived among trench systems, dugouts, discarded rations and the debris of war. Our First World War interpretation explores the problems soldiers faced with vermin, the struggle to protect food and equipment, and the harsh conditions of life in the trenches. Through military costume, historical storytelling and interactive encounters, visitors discover a lesser-known aspect of the Great War and the daily battle against an enemy that was small, persistent and everywhere.
