The History of Flight

From Icarus to the Space Race

Take to the skies and travel through thousands of years of human imagination, invention and discovery!

What if you could step into the story of flight and meet the people who helped make humanity’s dream of flying a reality?

With Time Jump Histories, your pupils don't just learn about the history of flight — they become part of it!

Our interactive History of Flight workshop takes children on an exciting journey through time, beginning with the ancient story of Icarus and his attempt to fly, travelling through the great inventions and pioneers of aviation, and finishing with the incredible achievements of modern flight and the Space Race.

Throughout the workshop, children have the opportunity to dress up as historical characters, handle props and take part in practical activities as they become inventors, engineers, aviators, astronauts and pioneers themselves.

🚀 A Journey Through Time

Our adventure can explore key moments and characters from the history of flight, including:

  • đŸĒŊ Icarus and the ancient dream of flight – exploring humanity's earliest stories and ideas about taking to the skies.
  • 🎨 Leonardo da Vinci – discovering his fascination with flight and exploring his designs for flying machines.
  • 🎈 The age of balloons – discovering how early pioneers finally began to rise above the ground.
  • âš™ī¸ The development of aviation – exploring the inventions, experiments and challenges that brought powered flight closer to reality.
  • ✈ī¸ The Wright Brothers – becoming early aviation pioneers and discovering how Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved controlled, powered flight.
  • đŸ›Šī¸ The Golden Age of Aviation – exploring how aircraft developed and transformed the way people travelled and connected the world.

  • 🚀 The Space Race – following humanity's journey from aircraft to rockets and beyond the atmosphere.
  • 🌕 The Moon and beyond – discovering the extraordinary achievement of sending humans into space and landing on the Moon.

👨‍🚀 Become Part of the Story

This isn't a workshop where children simply sit and listen.

The children become the characters.

With costumes and props supplied by Time Jump Histories, pupils can dress up and take on different roles throughout the story. They might become an early aviator, an inventor, an engineer, a pilot or even an astronaut!

Through storytelling, role-play, demonstrations and hands-on activities, pupils experience the challenges faced by the pioneers of flight and discover how ideas that once seemed impossible gradually became reality.

🎓 Learning Through Experience

The workshop encourages children to explore:

  • How ideas about flight developed throughout history
  • The science and engineering behind early flying machines
  • The challenges faced by aviation pioneers
  • How aircraft technology changed over time
  • The impact of aviation on society and warfare
  • The development of rockets and space travel
  • The importance of experimentation, problem-solving and perseverance

Most importantly, children discover that history isn't just something that happened in the past — it's a story of people who imagined what might be possible and then tried to make it happen.
